썸(Some): Learning Dating Terms from K-pop Lyrics

소유 X 정기고 – 썸 feat 긱스 릴보이 SoYou X JunggiGo- Some feat Lil Boi of Geeks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-FhDScM_2w

This catchy love song was released in February 2014, and it is still in the Top 100 chart in Korea. When I first heard this song, I thought the title meant “some” as in “a little bit.” But recently, I learned that it has a different meaning in this case. Since this is a new trend, it’s not in the dictionary yet.

썸 (some)

When two people are more than just friends, and has been on some dates to get to know each other, but do not call each other boyfriend/girlfriend yet. Their ambiguous relationship is camouflaged by the word “friend.” This relationship is exciting, but also frustrating because you’re not sure about what the other side is thinking.

Examples) 썸남 (the guy you’re seeing), 썸녀 (the girl you’re seeing), 썸 탄다. (I’m just seeing him/her right now.) 썸 타는 사이. (A relationship of just seeing each other.) 썸인지 아닌지 몰라요. (I don’t know if we are “seeing” each other or not. )

Here are some new words and phrases that I learned from the song.  Maybe they will come in handy in your daily Korean conversations!

Please let me know if you find any mistakes or suggestions~ I’m still learning Korean 🙂

요즘 따라… These days especially…

~따라 is a particle used after a noun that shows time. “particularly… (when)” or “especially… (when)”

Example) 오늘따라, 그 날따라 “오늘 따라 보고 싶어요.” (I miss you especially today.)

무뚝뚝하게 굴지마. Don’t act so coldly.

I think this could be used when you want to get attention from a friend that is acting coldly.

날 사랑한다 = You love me.

고백해 줘 = Please confess your love to me.

purrrrrr

생각 할 수록 너의 진심이 더 궁금해지는 걸 The more I think about it, the more I become curious about your true feelings.

~ 할 수록 = the more I do … 생각 할 수록 = the more I think about it Example) 먹으면 먹을 수록 마음에 들어요. The more I eat it, the more I like it.

진심 = true feelings Example) 진심이야? Are those your true feelings?

더~~ 지다 = become more… 더 궁금해지다 = become more curious Example) 더 궁금해져요. 더 예뻐진다 (You’ve become prettier).

Picking up some key words and learning their meanings makes it easier for me to sing them in noraebang sessions.
