My love for escape rooms started in July 2017 and last week I did my 227th escape room. I have done escape rooms in Japan🇯🇵, the U.S.🇺🇸, Vietnam🇻🇳, Czech Republic🇨🇿, Canada🇨🇦, and Hong Kong🇭🇰, but most of my experience has been in South Korea🇰🇷.
These days, when I try to find a new escape room to do, I have to make sure to read the reviews, so I do not end up with a super easy room that I end up finishing in 30 minutes with no hint. It’s a good confidence booster for completing the game quickly, but it’s not exciting and feels like we lost some money because we paid for the 60 minute immersive experience. 💸 My escape room friends and I need a challenge. Usually those rooms are more than 60 minutes long, and are difficult to make a reservation because of its popularity.
I learned about Angelio, from Gangnam Key Escape The Oreum, from a friend’s friend who is also an escape room enthusiast. That friend recommended the room, but warned us that weekend reservation slots are almost impossible to get, so we should try to get a weekday slot. She was right. All weekend slots were fully booked. 😱
When I looked at their website, the calendar showed that bookings can be made 6 days earlier at 9 pm. So if we wanted to make a reservation on Saturday, we had to be ready on the Sunday before at 9 pm.
I messaged my escape room friends at 8:55 pm on Sunday to get ready. Four of us were ready to refresh the website at 9:00 pm on the dot. 9:00. All of us could not connect to the page at all. When it finally worked we got to see the calendar and time slots, but they were already filled or could not connect again after clicking another button. We had failed. 😩Maybe we needed to go to a PC Room for the fastest internet connection. It was intense.
We decided to go to a different escape room that weekend, but a few weeks later when we randomly decided to escape, I checked the time slots just in case to see if there were any cancellations. And there it was. One slot on Sunday morning at 9:50 am. 😍
I immediately clicked, reserved, and transferred the full cost because I did not want to lose this opportunity. YESSSS. We got it. It didn’t matter even if we had to wake up early in the morning on a non-work day. It will be worth it.
AND IT WAS GREAT. We escaped with 1 minute and 47 seconds to spare out of 70 minutes! 🎉 The rooms were clean, decorative, and had so many handmade props and gadgets that I have never seen in other rooms before. Someone must have worked hard with cutting and painting wood and plastic for weeks. 🖌️The puzzles all made logical sense, so I was not disappointed at any point in the game. This room is now my most favorite escape room out of the 227 escape rooms that I have done before. 👑
The room was a mystery until we were actually in it, but now the picture makes sense. 👀 As they say in the theme explanation page, I also do not recommend anyone to wear heels 👠 or skirts if you want to comfortably complete this game. This room should also be done with at least 3 or more escape room enthusiasts because at one point in the puzzle, there should be 3 people looking at 3 different things to communicate and solve the puzzle together. If there are more than 4, some people may be left without a task to do, but there are plenty of things to observe in the room to stay entertained and ready for the next puzzle. Basic to intermediate level Korean would be necessary to understand some puzzles, but you would not need to read paragraphs, so it would not be too intense for Korean learners.
I did some Key Escape rooms back in 2018, and I loved their Black Pearl room for the huge ship in their room, and interactive puzzles that went well with the pirate theme, but it didn’t particularly stand out compared to the other escape room companies that we have been to. Seoul Escape Room was probably one of the pioneers with their unique props, themes, and decorations, and it feels like Key Escape made it better with their newest rooms.
I also did Holy Day from Hongdae Key Escape which is also one of the newer rooms in Key Escape, and I was impressed with their props, number of rooms, activities, and puzzles in that theme. I will be looking forward to doing WANNA GO HOME, US, [Book] 짝꿍, 꽃순이 (Partner, Flower Giver), Back to the Scene, Wonder We Are, Nerd, and 삐릿-뽀 (Robot Sounds).
I am also looking forward to trying Nomon: The Ordeal from Golden Key Gangnam Time Square because reservation slots seem to be fully booked every weekend I try to look. It’s 80 minutes long, and the explanation says: “Our store only accepts customers with reservations (promises). At the time of your reservation, go ahead and knock our door. ”
Can’t wait for my next escape room adventure! 🗝️
