돼지바 DESSERTS- A Dessert Flavor Trend in Korea

Three years ago, I tried the 돼지바 frappucino at Starbucks. Now the 돼지바 flavor is also a common flavor for macaroons and other desserts as well.

What is a 돼지바 (dwaejiba)?

The direct translation of it would be “pig bar.” In Korea, it’s one of the most common convenient store ice creams. It’s a vanilla ice cream bar filled with strawberry jam/syrup and covered with chunks of cookies and chocolate.

Buzzfeed recently compared it with America’s Strawberry Shortcake in their Food Swap video.

When you look through the #돼지바 tag on Instagram, you can see that most of their posts are macaroons! But some people have also experimented with the 돼지바 flavors and combined it with other desserts.

Red Cheek Macaroon is a tiny neighborhood macaroon cafe next to the Gangbuk-gucheong (district office). The owner updates her Instagram account at 11:30 AM to show which flavors are available that day. There are usually 8 different kinds of flavors available from 2,200 ~ 2,600 KRW. If there’s a red X mark next to the flavor name, then it’s already sold-out for that day.

Reservations can be made through the Instagram DM (direct message) and bank transfer within 30 minutes of the message. Pick-ups should be made before 8 pm.

  • 성함/ reservation name
  • 종류별개수/ your order *minimum 3
  • 보냉포장OX/ if you want the ice pack or not [+700원; bag included]
  • 선물포장OX/ if you want it gift wrapped or not [in a set of 5, 6, or 12; +700원; bag included]
  • 비닐봉투OX/ if you need a plastic bag or not [+50원]

When I got there at noon on a Saturday, I was the second one in line and people started lining up behind me.

The dwaejiba macaroon was so good! Crunchy chunks on the outside, and a strawberry syrup that gushes out when you bite in. You probably should not try to cut it in half unless you want to let the strawberry syrup fall on your plate instead of your taste buds. I also recommend their crème brûlée macaroon. Their custard is on point.

Which dwaejiba (돼지바) dessert do you want to try next?
